You know those stories that your mind tells you when you’re trying to do something new or difficult? The ones that make up lies like: “You’re not good enough, You aren’t smart enough, You can’t do x, y, z.” As a career changer, you’re constantly putting yourself out there and trying new things. And no doubt, it can be challenging. But remember it’s brave of you to choose vulnerability and admirable that you’re dedicated to discovering a career that is right for you. So, swap the sneaky negative self-talk for these positive affirmations for career change.
What are positive affirmations? And do they really work?
Positive affirmations, aka mantras, are words of encouragement or motivation that help to strengthen your mindset. They help fight off negative self-talk and prepare you for the day ahead or the challenge at hand.
And before you doubt the power of words, I have a little story for you.
I was first introduced to affirmations when my friend in high school encouraged me to use them during our cross country races. Listening to her advice, I repeated the words “I believe that I can do this” during every race. These words were simple, yet surprisingly, effective. They stopped negative thoughts from entering my mind, allowed me to push through pain and fatigue to the finish line, and propelled me from a JV runner to a Varsity athlete.
Now, you might be thinking, “sure Tiffani, it may have helped you as a child, but what about your adult life?” And to that I say, “fair, let me share a couple more examples.”
When I applied to my graduate degree program for education, I applied to one program. It was top ranked and provided money for tuition and living expenses. My friends thought I was crazy for only applying to one school, but I knew I was meant to attend. It wasn’t like my undergrad grades were out of this world good. Honestly, they were closer to average, but I believed I was worthy and I succeeded.
Then I applied to one teaching position. The opening and the school itself checked all of my boxes. I felt it was the right place for me, and sure enough I was invited to join their school community.
Positive affirmations are powerful. They’re truly magical. They shape your mindset and encourage you to believe that you are capable and worthy of the reality you want to create.
Because as Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t – you’re right.”
What are positive affirmations for career change?
Changing careers opens the door for endless possibilities. It’s an opportunity to strengthen your mindset muscle and create a reality that you desire. Exciting, I know!
As you enter this chapter of your life, believe in your worth. Because the second you believe that you have to prove your worth to others is the second that you’re fighting an uphill battle.
Trust me…I learned this the hard way. After sending countless applications and receiving rejection after rejection, I realized I was acting from a place of desperation. Every “No” was a hit to my self-worth and I no longer knew what to do. So, I decided it was time to harness the power of positive affirmations.
When you use positive affirmations for career change, you:
- control negative thoughts and emotions
- manage stress levels
- improve your confidence
- motivate yourself to find new opportunities to grow
- feel inspired to try challenging things
- set new goals
- strengthen your knowledge and skills
- believe that everything will work out and the right opportunity will find you
How do you use positive affirmations for career change?
All you truly need to do is repeat these words to yourself and find opportunities to remind yourself of these affirmations daily.
You may choose to repeat them as you’re:
- brushing your teeth
- drinking your morning tea or coffee
- commuting to work
- turning on your computer
- opening up LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, Google Jobs, etc
- starting your online class each day

By using James Clear’s method of building new habits called habit stacking, you can easily integrate these positive affirmations into your daily life.
You can set a daily reminder on your calendar or create an alarm. When your reminder sounds, pause what you’re doing and repeat your affirmations to yourself. If you notice certain times of the day, events, or actions that feel more challenging to you, then this is an especially great time to incorporate your positive affirmations.
